Photo by Luca Sammarco on PexelsThe Whisper Man, a psychological thriller starring Robert De Niro and Adam Scott, has rapidly become the number one film on Netflix, amassing 55 million views globally in just two weeks. Its success highlights the streaming giant’s recent focus on mid-budget genre movies.
Directed by James Ashcroft, The Whisper Man is described as a psychological thriller that pays homage to classic 1990s films such as The Silence of the Lambs, Copycat, and The Bone Collector, according to Collider’s David Caballero. The film’s plot follows a grieving novelist and his estranged father, played by Robert De Niro and Adam Scott, as they become embroiled in the disappearance of a child linked to a serial killer. Michelle Monaghan also stars in the movie.
The Whisper Man debuted with 23 million views in its opening week, followed by 33 million views in its second week, bringing its total to an impressive 55 million views. This strong performance has seen it outperform other popular titles on the Netflix chart, including the holdovers Shrek and Shrek 2, as well as The Last House.
Despite its commercial success, the film has received mixed reviews, currently holding a 46% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
The success of The Whisper Man fits into Netflix’s apparent strategy of focusing on mid-budget genre movies. This approach has yielded a string of hits throughout the year, with several films achieving over 100 million views. Among these, Alan Ritchson’s War Machine stands out as one of Netflix’s most-watched movies of all time. Other successful titles in this strategy include The Rip, Apex, and The Last House.
Adam Scott, a key star in The Whisper Man, also recently played a novelist in the spooky horror movie Hokum, which grossed nearly $25 million worldwide against a reported budget of $5 million and has been successful on the PVOD market.
